NBCC Special Report:
Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship
A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States ~
United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Forming Consciences for Faithful CitizenshipAs a nation, we share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation. However, as a people, we face serious challenges that are clearly political and also profoundly moral. We are a nation founded on “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,” but the right to life itself is not fully protected, especially for unborn children, the most vulnerable members of the American family. We are called to be peacemakers in a nation at war. We are a country pledged to pursue “liberty and justice for all,” but we are too often divided across lines of race, ethnicity, and economic inequality.

The program is designed for those engaged in pastoral service to parish communities of largely African-American Catholic membership. The program is also open to all interested persons, regardless of religious or ethnic background. Full Story

A black-tie banquet is planned to honor these scholars and to increase the resources of this fund. With keynote speaker the Most Rev. Wilton D. Gregory, Archbishop of Atlanta, and guest speaker, Cardinal Justin Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia, the gala will be held at the City Line Hilton in Philadelphia on Sunday, Nov. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets are $120 for the reception and dinner program. Order 2009 Josephite Calendar

Our 2009 calendar is blessed by Fr. Jim's beautiful interpretation of Biblical scenes. This year's theme, My Lord and My God, John 20:28, is beautifully expressed with brilliant color, religious sensitivity and artistic vision. Our cover picture (also reproduced in April) was specially done by Fr. Jim for the 2009 Josephite African American History & Heritage Calendar.

Once again Fr. Joseph Folzenlogen, S.J., has very kindly provided electronic files for Fr. Jim's artwork. We are grateful. Fr. Joseph celebrated 50 years as a priest in May 2008 -Congratulations! Full Story

The Southeastern Conference of Catholic AIDS Ministers (SECCAM) was established in May of 2007 to respond to the growing need for a Catholic-based response to the AIDS epidemic in the Southeastern region of the United States. It emerged from a concern of AIDS ministers and lay ecclesial ministers about the root causes leading to the rise of HIV infections in the South, now considered the "epicenter" of the second wave of AIDS in the country.

Abortion Changes You™

Abortion. It's a word that grips us when we hear it-sometimes with anger, sometimes with fear, and oftentimes with pain. Most people avoid the subject. Many advocate a position on the streets, in the courtrooms, or in the halls of Congress, while some pray for its end. But what about the tens of millions of Americans who've been personally touched by abortion? How can they find a safe place away from the polarized debate where they can make sense of their abortion experiences and connect with resources that are relevant to them? Full Story
